A Closer Look at Martin Osimani

Earlier today, our sister site, Rivalshoops.com, reported that Duquesne picked up a commitment from 6-3 point guard Martin Osimani of Miami-Dade J.C. in Miami, Fla.
JUCO Junction had a chance to catch up with Joe Rosado, who coached Osimani this year at Miami-Dade.

Osimani, a native of Uruguay, is a player that JUCO Junction had seen prior to his arrival on the junior college scene. He toured with a traveling squad called Team Breakdown while attending Champanat Catholic H.S. in Hialeah, Fla., and signed with Utah as a senior in high school.
At Utah last winter, Osimani appeared in 28 games, averaging 1.2 points, one rebound and one assist per game.
Despite missing the first six weeks of the 2002-2003 season at Miami-Dade, Osimani keyed the Sharks' run to the final four of the Region VIII Tournament earlier this month.
"Martin is an excellent point guard who sees the floor well," Rosado said. "He's a solid player who doesn't have a big ego."
"He will shoot the ball if he's open, but he prefers to deliver the ball to others," Rosado continued. "If Martin is surrounded by good talent, he can get them the basketball."
One area which Osimani is lacking is in the speed department. He is by no means a gazelle, according to Rosado, but he makes up for his lack of explosiveness with his court vision and awareness.
Osimani averaged 8.3 points, 7.0 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 3.7 steals as a sophomore at Miami Dade.
"His stats aren't dramatic," Rosado said. "We were a team that had a lot of kids who could score."
Osimani, who took visits to Duquesne, Texas A&M, UNC-Greensboro, UNC-Asheville and Florida Atlantic, also should bring some intangibles to the Dukes program.
"He's mature and a good student who carries a 3.4 GPA," Rosado said. "He's a tough kid and a team leader."
In addition to the schools he visited, Osimani was also looked at this winter by Rutgers and South Florida.
Osimani will have two years of eligibility at Duquesne, where he'll be reunited with former Breakdown teammate Simplece Njoya.
