A Number Of Schools Are Calling On Spears

There was a time when Kyle Spears had given some serious thought to walking away from the game of basketball. The 6-foot-9, 239-pound power forward from Johnson County Community College took a year off from the game before he decided to suit for JCCC head coach Mike Jeffers. Because of his hard work and dedication to the game, a number of mid to high major basketball programs are showing interest in the Kansas native.
“Kyle does have some schools that are interested in him,” Johnson County Community College Head Coach Mike Jeffers said. “Nebraska is showing the most interest right now, but other schools are involved as well. Southeast Missouri State, Loyola Chicago, UMKC, Southern Miss, UAB, Arkansas, Arkansas-Little Rock and Kansas State are some of the schools that have expressed an interest in Kyle.

“A lot of those schools are just sending mail,” he added. “I really couldn’t tell you how serious some of those schools are about recruiting Kyle. “Nebraska is definitely showing the most interest at this time, but I am sure that more schools will get involved after they see him play.”
After almost walking away from the game he has grown to love, Spears has spent a great deal of time working on all areas of his game. The Olathe, Kansas native still has several areas he must improve upon, but there is no doubt that he is working to become a complete player.
“Kyle is 6-foot-9 and weighs 239-pounds,” Coach Jeffers said. “He is athletic, he can run and he can jump. I would say that Kyle probably has a 35-inch vertical. He is really a late bloomer. I think he will develop into a four man and play that position when he leaves here.
“Kyle is comfortable playing in the high-low post and can play with his back to the basket,” he added. “He feels comfortable shooting from 12-feet and in, but needs to work on his shot from beyond that range.”
Coach Jeffers indicated that Spears would like to take two or three visits before making a decision about his future. It’s not yet known what schools he will visit, but it’s almost certain that Nebraska is a lock to receive one of the official visits.
