Aiken Techs Roland Bound for CAA

Had he waited to sign late, Aiken Tech's Calvin Roland might have had some high Division I offers.
But the 6-9, 245 pound center from Hephzibah, Ga., opted to sign early with Virginia Commonwealth, according to Aiken Tech Head Coach Charles Welch.

"We think that is going to be a very good fit for Calvin," Welch said. "We are excited for him, and he really enjoyed meeting Coach Capel and enjoyed his visit up there."
"He likes the campus, the facility, and the potential teammates that he will have up there next year," Welch continued. "He sees it as an up and coming program that he's excited to be a part of."
Roland took official visits this fall to Georgia State, Austin Peay and VCU. Georgia came in and watched him this fall, and the Bulldogs might have pursued him hard had he signed late.
Welch feels that Roland is in a good spot at VCU.
"I think it's a good fit for him, and he will bring to the table exactly what they need to help them be successful," he said.
"I think that they will help him develop more as a player and a person," Welch concluded.
