Big Timers Already Lining Up for Donta Smith

Donta Smith, a well built 6-6, 220 pound small forward from Southeastern Illinois College in Harrisburg, Ill., is one of the top junior college prospects in the junior college Class of 2004.
Smith, who dazzled scouts and fans at last month's NJCAA Tournament in Hutchinson, Kan., has seen a number of high major programs visit tiny Harrisburg this month to throw their hats in the ring with the LaGrange, Ky., native.

Southeastern Illinois Head Coach Todd Franklin told JUCO Junction that UNLV's Charlie Spoonhour, Cincinnati's Bob Huggins, Mississippi State's Rick Stansbury and Iowa State's Larry Eustachy have been among the head coaches in this spring to take a look at Smith.
Louisville Head Coach Rick Pitino called Franklin regarding Smith last week, and the Cardinals sent Asst. Coach Vince Taylor over to Harrisburg on Monday to take a look at Donta. The coaching staffs at Oklahoma and Minnesota have also been in this spring to take a look at Smith.
As a freshman in 2002-2003, Smith averaged 15.9 points, 5.3 rebounds and three assists per game for the Falcons, who finished 34-2. He shot 60 percent from the floor and over 40 percent beyond the three point arc.
What separates Smith from many other junior college prospects is his well rounded game. A fine run/jump athlete, he scores capably in transition and handles the ball very proficiently for his size.
But Smith isn't a one trick pony. He not only scores, but he passes the ball adroitly from the high post and can create his own shot off the dribble. His size and hops allow him to be an effective rebounder, but it's clear that his future at the high major level and beyond is out on the wing.
JUCO Junction will stay on top of Smith's recruitment as the summer evaluation period approaches, and we'll keep you informed of any schools that hop in with the talented small forward. Stay tuned!
