Cecil College in North East,MD has had great success under head coach Bill Lewit this decade. The Seahawks are currently (23-0) on the season and ranked #1 in the latest NJCAA Division 2 Poll. The Seahawks only have two sophomores on this season's roster to go along with nine freshmen. JucoJunction had a chance to touch base with coach Lewit today on his players' recruitment.
Antonio Haymon, a (SO) 6-foot-6 combo forward, is currently averaging 19.7 ppg and 8.1 rebounds on the season. Antonio visited Binghamton this past fall.
"Antonio may be the best athlete I have ever coached. He can score the ball inside-out," said Lewit.
SMU, Marshall, Akron and Kent State have shown interest in Haymon this season. Haymon prepped at National Christian Academy in Fort Washington, MD. Haymon has scored 892 career points at Cecil College.
AJ Spencer, a (SO) 6-foot-2 point guard, scored over 1,700 points in high school.
"AJ has a high basketball IQ and possesses all the winning qualities you want your lead guard to have," said Lewit.
Spencer is getting interest from Coastal Carolina, Maryland-Eastern Shore, Fairfield and Loyola (MD) according to coach Lewit.
"AJ is a strong physical guard," said Lewit.
AJ is currently averaging 10.7 ppg, 4 rebounds and 6 assists this season. Spencer was the MVP of the Cecil Holiday tourney before Christmas. Spencer and Haymon are currently 54-1 in their careers at Cecil College.
The Seahawks will try to clinch their 5th straight Maryland regular season championship this weekend. The Seahawks are 93-1 against Maryland opponents in their last 94 games and 151-9 since the start of the 2004 season.
