Combo guard picks Tech

The Red Raiders have picked up their fourth commit for the 2014 recruiting class in the form of West Plains (Missouri) Missouri State-West Plains point guard Devaugntah Williams. Williams, who visited Texas Tech over the weekend, said he believes Tubby Smith's squad is headed in the right direction, and he wants to be a part of the revitalization of Tech basketball.
"I felt like it's a great opportunity. I feel like it's a young team with a lot of potential. They didn't even play a very good game against Texas, and they still pulled out a win, so I know next year, with a few more pieces, we'll get a lot of wins."

The JUCO point guard also said he had a great visit, stating that the environment at the game against Texas, his relationship with the coaching staff, and the bonds he built with current Red Raider players all made for a great weekend.
"I loved it. The environment was good. The staff, like the president, the chancellor, the tutors, the coaches, I loved it. 100 percent. The atmosphere was crazy. I love the support system with the fans and all the people that came out to watch them," he said. "We hung out with the players, and we all clicked right away. I loved it."
Williams felt at home around the coaching staff over the length of his visit, and his relationship with the entire staff was one of the huge reasons he decided to become a Red Raider.
"Coach Tubby, he made me feel comfortable as soon as I came here. Him, Coach Joe Esposito, Coach Pooh, Coach Taylor, the trainers, it's all love."
Tech has had some trouble with scoring on a consistent basis over the last few seasons, and Williams believes he can come in and fix the ailment.
"They recruited me to score and create shots. I can do a lot. I can create, I'm very athletic, I can pass, drive, shoot, and I just want to continue working on my game to help the squad."
The fact that the Red Raiders want him to come in and be a go-to scorer means a lot to the Ohio native, and he's ready to get to work in preparation for this summer.
"That's motivation to me. When I get back to my JUCO college, I'm just going to get in the weight room and work out every day. Then, come summer school at Texas Tech, I'll just keep putting in work."
Williams is ready to get his Tech career rolling, and he can't wait to play for Coach Smith in the Big 12.
"I'm very excited, me coming into play in one of the best conferences in the nation for one of the best coaches in the nation. I believe in what he's doing."
Williams committed to Tech over offers from UTSA, Southern Miss, Iona, and Kent State.
