Cougars core nucleus returns

The start of the junior college basketball is right around the corner. The State of Alabama has some talent this season and we were on hand to see some it it this past weekend in Jonesboro, G.A. at Kenn Littlefield's Southeastern Jamboree. Lawson State Community College in Birmingham, A.L. has made great strides the past few seasons under head coach Phillip Shumpert. The Cougars have a solid nucleus of sophomores back to lead this squad this coming season.

Larry McGaughey averaged 18.6 points per game last season from the wing position. "Larry really can go after it and create his own shot," said JucoJunction Publisher Bret Swanson. McGaughey visited UTEP a few weeks back but remains open in the recruiting process. Arkansas State and Southeast Missouri State have shown interest in him this fall.
Tarvin Gaines a power forward from Birmingham, A.L. plays the power forward position for the Cougars. Gaines informed JucoJunction that he has received interest from Ohio University, Wichita State,Arkansas-Little Rock, Alabama A&M and Alabama State this fall.
Gaines averaged 10.6 points and 5.7 rebounds per game last season. "Tarvin is a left-handed power forward with a nice turnaround jumper," said Swanson.
Worrell Clahar is the floor leader for the Cougars for the second year in a row. Clahar prepped in high school at Sound Doctrine Christian Academy in LaGrange, G.A. after leaving New York City.
The point guard averaged 14.6 points and 6.8 assists per game last season. Clahar informed JucoJunction he has received interest from South Carolina State (visited), Texas Southern and Louisiana-Monroe this fall.
Taaj Ridley transferred into Lawson State Community College this season from Barton Community College in Great Bends, K.S. Ridley is 6-foot-7 and hails from the Bronx, N.Y. He was not with the team this weekend and was left back on campus in Birmingham according to coach Shumpert.
