DeGroot Back at NMMI; Takes Early Fall Trip

Travis DeGroot, the 6-2, 200 pound point guard from Montclair, N.J., has made it back out to New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, N.M., this fall.
DeGroot enjoyed a terrific freshman campaign at NMMI in 2001-2002, but his 2002-2003 season was sidetracked by some off the court issues.

JUCO Junction checked in with NMMI Head Coach Reggie Franklin this week, and he brought us up to speed with DeGroot's recruitment.
DeGroot took an official visit to Georgia State this past weekend (Aug. 29-31), and has also generated interest from Lamar and Arkansas State.
Last year at this time, a host of high majors were recruiting DeGroot. For whatever reason, DeGroot didn't enjoy too many strong showings this past summer on the JC hoop circuit. He attended a pair of events in Indiana in July.
Coach Franklin expects DeGroot's recruitment to pick up as the junior college basketball season gets underway in November. He expects DeGroot to make a spring decision.
"A lot of people don't know that he's gotten himself back together," Franklin said. "His work ethic has been good, and he's been making everyone go and work hard in preseason work-outs. It's just a matter of Travis going out there and proving himself again."
As for his visit to Georgia State, Franklin said it went well.
"But he probably won't sign until the spring," he added.
DeGroot and NMMI are expected to participate in a pair of fall jamborees in October.
NMMI is one of several Region V programs that will gather on Oct. 11 for a small jamboree at Odessa College in Texas. The Broncos will then wrap up the month Oct. 24-25 at the Mullen/Mitchell Jamboree in Dallas, Tex.
JUCO Junction plans on attending the latter event, so we'll let you know how DeGroot looks at that time. Stay tuned!
