Essengue hoping to lead playoff run

It could be a make-or-break week for the Weatherford Coyotes. Weatherford is 14-and-10 overall and 5-and-4 in league plays as it hosts McLennan and Collin this week. The Coyotes currently have a one-game lead for the final playoff spot in their region.
"We can finish out on a good note and make it to the reg tournament," said head coach Mark Osina. "We've got the talent once got there that we have a chance. No matter what place we come in, you've got to win three games in a row at the regional tournament. It seems like we're getting better."

One player Osina would like to see get better is UNLV signee Gaston Essengue.
"I think he can play a lot better than he's played," Osina said. "We still haven't seen the big game out of him against a tougher opponent. We're hoping that will come through this week, hopefully we'll see him step it up."
Essengue and fellow Cameroon native Brice Nengsu, who signed early with Creighton, will be key for the Coyotes down the stretch. In addition, Osina points out the play of freshman point guard Ben Bell and sophomore John Wilder as positives.
Wilder was the only returning player from last year's Weatherford team. Osina thinks he has a chance to play Division One ball next year, but says because of academics, mostly D-2 teams have shown interest so far.
