Familiarity leads OField to ASU pledge
Arizona State wasn't an unknown to Maurice O'Field, since the Sun Devils have been recruiting him under the previous coaching regime. After committing to Buffalo in March, he ultimately followed Bobby Hurley to Tempe and committed to ASU Friday afternoon.
The 6-5 210-pound
Maurice O'Field who prepped at John Hay High School in Cleveland, Ohio originally signed with Eastern Tennessee State but due to academics ended up enrolling at Midland (Tex.) College. He was injured during the 2013-14 campaign, but last season he averaged 15.8 points and five rebounds per game at Midland, shooting 50.2 percent from the field.
The wing player did commit to Bobby Hurley and the University of Buffalo, but following Hurley's resignation and subsequently being tabbed as Arizona State's new head coach O'Field decided to decommit from the Bulls and follow Hurley to Tempe.
"Coach Hurley is a great player's coach," O'Field said. "He gets a lot out of his players and I want to be a part of it. I like his style where he gives his players confidence and freedom to play, get a lot of baskets in transition and that is a perfect fit in my mind.
O'Field confessed that he did expect to commit to the Sun Devils during the visit, and everything he has experienced in the last 24 hours or so confirmed that this would be a great fit for him.
"The practice facility is great," O'Field said, "and it already feels like home (laughs). I really like how the whole set up is with everything being in one area. You have the weight room, the study hall, the practice court and the coaches' offices all right here, so you can just stay here all day.
"They (ASU) recruited me before and just playing in the Pac-12 is an honor and I'm happy to play at that level. Just the whole situation here with the academics, the weather, the coaching it's all great. The support from the staff, the strength coaches, the academic people, the family atmosphere and just everyone being in high spirits have been standing out to me the most and it's something I want to be part of."
O'Field is scheduled to officially sign with ASU before his visit ends tomorrow, and is expected to join the team in July. He is a three for three player in terms of eligibility.
