Goodrich Signs; Panola College Update

Gil Goodrich, the high octane 5-9 point guard from Panola College in Carthage, Tex., has signed a national letter of intent with Lamar University.
JUCO Junction caught up with Panola Head Coach Scott Monarch on Tuesday night, and he said that Goodrich should be a good fit at the Southland Conference program.

"Gil is a point guard who can really push it and make good decisions in the open floor," Monarch said. "He needs a school that will let him play that way."
Billy Tubbs was noted for up tempo offenses at both Oklahoma and Texas Christian University.
"Lamar is a school that is typically at the top of the Southland Conference," Monarch added. "Coach Tubbs has won over 600 games, and I think that Gil can learn a lot from him."
Goodrich, who transferred into Panola after spending a year at Howard University in Washington, D.C., averaged 12.6 points and 7.6 assists per game as a sophomore for the Ponies.
Four other Panola sophomores have also made spring decisions.
Marcus Lewis, a 6-8 power forward from Birmingham, Ala., has signed with Alabama A&M. He averaged 2.2 points and five rebounds per game for the Ponies in 2002-2003.
Damien Smith, a high scoring 6-1 shooting guard from Spearsville, La., signed with Texas Southern. He was Panola's second leading scorer behind Omar Thomas, averaging 17.9 points per game.
Johnny Miller, a 6-4 forward from Muncie, Ind., signed with Maryland-Eastern Shore. Miller, who spent two years at Jackson State in Mississippi, averaged 8.3 points per game.
Lastly, 6-0 point guard Tramaine Hancock of Kountze, Tex., signed with Texas Pan American. Hancock averaged 3.2 points and 4.9 assists per game for the Ponies in 2002-2003.
Two other Panola sophomores are still unsigned this spring -- 6-5 small forward Omar Thomas of Philadelphia, Penn., and 6-4 forward Zack Allison of Carthage, Tex. Thomas is profiled elsewhere on this site.
