Hutchs Breland A-10 Bound

Derrick Breland, a strong 5-10, 183 pound point guard from Hutchinson C.C. in Hutchinson, Kan., has signed a national letter of intent with Fordham University.
According to Hutch Asst. Coach Eric Duft, interest in Breland swelled this spring as Fordham and Georgia became involved late after coaching changes at their respective schools.

"Coach Wittenburg recruited Derrick when he was at Georgia Tech," Duft said. "When he found out he was still available, he jumped on it."
Breland's recent official visit to Fordham sealed the deal.
As a sophomore this past season at Hutch, Breland averaged 7.5 points and 2.8 assists per game.
"He's a great student and a tremendous kid, so there not taking a chance with him," Duft said. "He's real excited about it."
"He's a good shooter who is extremely fast and quick with the ball," Duft continued. "He's offensive minded in that he looks to attack the basket, but he just needs to improve his decision making."
Breland started out his college career at Boston University in the 2000-2001 school year. He left BU and took classes at a local junior college in 2001-2002 before enrolling at Hutch last fall.
Breland played in a solid backcourt at Hutch that featured South Carolina spring signee Josh Gonner. He will have two years of eligibility at Fordham.
