Maurice OField high on Maryland
Maryland coach Mark Turgeon has already ventured down to Texas to find one JUCO player in its 2015 class in Odessa Community College point guard
Jaylen Brantley, who signed with the Terps in October.
Now the staff has its eyes on another JUCO prospect from the same area in wing forward
Maurice O'Field, who is enjoying a very productive season for Midland College in Midland, Texas.
O'Field is one of the top wing prospects left in the 2015 class and is averaging 17 points, five rebounds and three assists per game this season.
He recently told TSR that one of his coaches spoke with Maryland and believes they will be in Texas on Jan. 19 to watch O'Field and Brantley as Midland takes on its rival Odessa CC.
Playing so close to each other, O'Field and Brantley have interacted and even played together before. O'Field said that they were a lethal combination on the court together and that they would certainly be talking to each other about the Terps at some point.
"I will most definitely talk to [Brantley]," O'Field said. "We were on the same team at Top 100 camp this summer and killed it. I have a decent relationship with him seeing him around town."
With offers already from Maryland, Arizona State, Virginia Tech and Louisiana Tech, O'Field said he has also been receiving heavy interest from Gonzaga and Marquette and talks to their coaches regularly.
He said he would like to have his commitment made by the next signing period in March but that he needs to take some official visits first.
As for which schools he will make his priority to visit first, O'Field is still unsure but said his interest in Maryland is "very high" and that he would love to visit College Park once given the OK by his head coach at Midland.
"I don't have one [school] over the other but I have built a solid relationship with coach [Dustin] Clark [at Maryland]," O'Field said. "I didn't know much about Maryland before I met coach Clark but over the past three months I've learned a lot about Maryland basketball. Not really much to dislike about it. Maryland is a great place in my eyes."
At 6-foot-6, 215 pounds, O'Field has great size to play at the next level and one was one of the best players in the state of Ohio before moving on to Texas to play JUCO ball.
The Cleveland native said his time in Texas has helped him improve his game in areas that he needed to in order to be better prepared for D-I basketball and that he is still working on specific areas of his game to make him excel at the next level.
"My main focus of improvement is three-point shooting and ball handling-make a higher percentage from three and being able to get in my scoring areas easier would be key and is something that I am continuously working at," O'Field said.
"JUCO ball has helped me in a lot of ways," O'Field added. "I'd say the biggest one would be the competitiveness of the other players and the physicality of the game. Everyday at practice and in games I must play hard, play smart, and play strong to try and help my team win and also have a good game. This is something that will allow me to transition from Midland College to D-I."
