Santa Fe point with high-major options

Santa Fe Community College was ranked in the top five in the country at times in 2004, thanks to three players who went on to sign with Division One schools. The Saints boast another high-major D1 prospect this season in Andres Sandoval.
"He's a big point guard, very, very talented kid," said SFCC assistant Stephen Cox. "He has really, really, really deep shooting range for a point guard. He doesn't drive as much as he shoots it from deep, but he can be physical in there, posts up smaller guys."

Sandoval, at 6-foot-4, already has offers from Dayton and Texas A&M. Purdue, DePaul, Michigan, NC State and Florida have also been in contact. Division One coaches like his size for the point guard position.
"He's definitely a point guard, can handle it just fine," Cox said. "He can shoot it real good too. He can be a combo guard, but he wants to be a point guard. If he can do it, might as well let him."
Sandoval has expressed an interest in signing early with whichever school he chooses.
6-foot-5 forward Dionte Perry is also attracting interest. Cox said Jacksonville, Winthrop, Texas-San Antonio and Louisiana-Lafayette are among the schools that have been in to see Perry in the month of September.
Recruiters would be wise to stay in contact at Santa Fe for 2007 as well. Western Carolina transfer Gavin Horne should attract plenty of Division One attention in his two years.
"I don't think word has really gotten out about Gavin," Cox said. "These two years for him are huge, for the word getting out on him. He's going to definitely make it. He's going to need two years with us, and his freshman year will be big for him and getting recruited highly as a sophomore."
Cox said Horne would likely play on the wing at the Division One level, but is very comfortable in the post and he could play some four for the Saints this season.
