Sawyer a Consistent Factor for CSI

Dante Sawyer has been the rock for the College of Southern Idaho basketball program this winter.
Sawyer, a versatile 6-6 small forward from San Francisco, Calif., is leading the Golden Eagles in scoring this season. He also ranks among the tops in several other key categories for CSI, which is currently 13-6 overall and 8-6 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.

Sawyer averages 15.6 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game, shooting 42 percent from the floor, 32 percent beyond the arc and 71 percent from the foul line. He has appeared in 18 of the Golden Eagles' 19 games, starting 15.
CSI Asst. Coach Barret Peery told JUCO Junction that Fresno State, Portland State, Florida State and Oklahoma have shown the most interest in Sawyer. Back in the fall, Sawyer took an official visit to Fresno State, but he declined to sign early.
Former CSI Head Coach Guy Beach, who was instrumental in recruiting Sawyer to Twin Falls, Id., is now an assistant coach at Fresno State.
"Dante scores with the ball and is a pretty good defender," Peery said. "If he makes a late push here, I am sure he will generate more interest."
The biggest issue of all for Sawyer could be academics. Right now, he will need the summer to graduate, and that means he has slim margin for error in the classroom this semester.
JUCO Junction will stay on top of the situation, so keep it here for the latest on McGriff and other top prospects in the JC Class of 2004.
