South Plains Duo Headed Separate Ways

Marcus Jackson and Cassiano Matheus signed together at Georgia back in the fall, but both players now appear to be headed their separate ways this spring.
JUCO Junction caught up with South Plains Asst. Coach Josh Newman on Thursday night, and he confirmed that both players were granted their releases from Georgia on Monday.

Jackson, a 6-8, 240 pound power forward from Peoria, Ill., appears to be headed to Marquette.
In fact, Marquette Head Coach Tom Crean was in Levelland on Tuesday to make his pitch to Jackson, who averaged 7.8 points, 9.3 rebounds and two assists per game for the 31-4 Texans. He shot 62 percent from the floor but just 39 percent from the foul line.
Jackson leaves on Sunday, May 4 and returns on Tuesday, May 6 from an official visit to Marquette.
"If he comes back and doesn't like it, then he could open up his recruitment," Newman said. "But right now, it looks like he's going to Marquette."
As for Matheus, the 6-10 center also appears to have a new college all but picked out. Newman said that Utah State is the strong leader for the Brazilian big man, who averaged 8.6 points and 5.6 rebounds per game for the Texans in 2002-2003.
Back in the fall, Matehus visited both Georgia and Utah State before signing with the Bulldogs.
"He really likes Utah State right now," Newman said. "He felt comfortable when he first went there, and they worked him very hard."
Matheus shot 58 percent from the floor this past season.
JUCO Junction will keep you posted on both players this spring, and when they each reach decisions, we'll let you know.
