Wabbington Commits to Wyoming

Derek Wabbington, a 6-9, 240 pound power forward/center from Northeastern J.C. in Sterling, Colo., has committed to Wyoming.
Wabbington is the third J.C. post player this month and the second this week to commit to the Cowboys. He joins Eastern Utah's Chris Anderson and Colby's Justin Williams as members of the fall Wyoming haul.

"They had actually recruited Derek prior to him coming here out of high school," noted NJC Head Coach Brian Joyce. "After he got here, they pursued him hard."
Wabbington took visits this fall to Boise State and Wyoming before casting his lot with the Cowboys.
"He enjoyed his visit with the players and saw them practice," Joyce said of the Wyoming trip. "He felt it would be a good flow from our program to their program in terms of how they do things."
Wabbington, a native of Phoenix, Ariz., enjoyed a solid freshman campaign for the Plainsmen. Joyce is expecting even bigger things from Wabbington in 2003-2004.
"Derek is a very good defensive rebounder," Joyce said. "He's long, left handed, and can play with his back to the basket."
"His skills facing the basket create a matchup problem for other teams, because he's an inside/outside guy with range out to three point land," Joyce continued. "He's head and shoulders above last year."
Wabbington will have two years of eligibility remaining at Wyoming.
