Will Academics Cloud McGriffs Future

There's little questioning Jason McGriff's ability as a mid to high major basketball prospect.
A handful of high majors are involved with McGriff this winter, but the bigger question might be the academic situation of the 6-7 combo forward from Palm Bay, Fla.

CSI Asst. Coach Barret Peery told JUCO Junction that academics could be the determining factor in whether McGriff is able to transfer to an NCAA Division I school.
"We're not sure if he is going to make it academically," Peery said. "He needs to work on it and get it done."
Utah, Purdue and Cincinnati are among the colleges showing the most serious interest in McGriff, Peery said.
McGriff put up solid numbers in 2002-2003 as a freshman at Odessa College in Texas. He's been on a bit more of a roller coaster this year at CSI, where he averages 8.3 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game this season.
McGriff is shooting 52 percent from the field, 29 percent beyond the arc and 70 percent from the foul line. He has started 13 of the 16 games that he has appeared in this season for the Golden Eagles.
After serving a one game suspension in CSI's 48-36 loss to Dixie on Friday night, McGriff came back with a yeomanlike 14 point, 15 rebound effort in the Golden Eagles' 58-35 victory over the Rebels on Saturday.
"Jason has been very up and down," Peery said. "He looked like a monster on Saturday night against Dixie. The effort is consistently good, but the production varies."
McGriff's academic situation will ultimately dictate where he winds up in the fall. We'll continue to monitor his progress both on the court and in the classroom as the spring signing period approaches. Stay tuned!
